Invasive species eradication

Invasive Species

Invasive plants and animals are a very significant source of environmental deterioration, especially in ecosystems like Hawai’i. Invasive species are organisms introduced to Hawai’i that harm, threaten, and out-compete native species for resources and habitat.

Volunteer

There are many ways to get involved in conservation efforts around the state. Many of these agencies rely heavily on the work done and time committed through volunteer support – which is made more effective when the volunteers understand what they are doing and why they are doing it.

Watershed

Knowing that water is fundamental for life, the protection of our watersheds, and therefore our forests, is essential to sustain all life in Hawai’i.

Food Security

Kuilima Farm, owned by Turtle Bay Resort and managed by Pono Pacific Land Management (Hawai‘i’s largest private natural resource conservation company), is permanently dedicated to agricultural use, held under conservation easement. Kuilima Farm is currently food safety certified under the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), which allows Kuilima Farm to increase food security to the North Shore tourism industry and surrounding community, which is impactful since Hawai‘i currently imports 90% of its food. Renewable Jet Fuel

Pono Pacific’s partnership with Par Hawaii will identify and develop local sources of vegetable and other plant-based oil to produce renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at the Kapolei refinery. Renewable diesel, which uses naturally produced or waste oils, rather than petroleum, can be used to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from power generation and transportation. Pono Pacific will vet potential crops and identify suitable land and farming partners to determine the best long-term strategy for Par Hawaii. The goal is to produce locally sourced renewable fuel products that are accessible to all Hawai‘i residents and businesses. Sustainable aviation fuel produced by Par Hawaii will help airlines refueling in the islands reduce their carbon footprint. Production of renewable fuels is projected to begin in 2025.
